Bethesda is a community in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, just northwest of Washington, DC. This fabulous city offers numerous options when it comes to housing and attractions. There are three Metro stations within the boundaries, and with DC just minutes away, you will have everything you need within easy reach.

Bethesda is roughly bounded by the Capital Beltway to the north and west. The Potomac River’s intersection with the state line provides the most southern point of the city, and Wisconsin Avenue completes the boundaries to the east. Washington, DC borders the city to the south. Silver Spring is to the east, North Bethesda and later Rockville to the north, and Potomac to the west.

Prices here are somewhat higher than other DC suburbs, but one of the reasons for this is the wide variety of homes for sale. The downtown area is mostly filled with condo developments, while the residential outskirts offer a larger range of housing styles. Brand new, luxurious houses are common on the outskirts, as quiet roads with enormous trees and beautifully landscaped gardens offer a more serene living style compared to the hustle and bustle of downtown. Its proximity to DC is also a commuters’ dream and a large reason why many homebuyers are flocking to Bethesda.

Things to Do in Bethesda

Bethesda Row near the Bethesda Metro station provides ample amounts of dining and entertainment options. A Regal Cinema is just down the street from the station, and next door is Bethesda Row Cinema. This renovated theater shows indie and foreign films in a contemporary setting with concessions and a cocktail bar. Round House Theatre is a nearby venue for a local theater company and is where Bethesda residents gather for plays, musicals and educational arts programming. For the young actors, Imagination Stage is a performing arts theater on Auburn Avenue and offers after-school programs and summer camps for aspiring performers.

When it comes to dining out, locals love Woodmont Grill. An American restaurant located on Woodmont Avenue, Woodmont Grill  features upscale fare that includes burgers, salmon and steaks. This spot is also home to live jazz music every night. Passage to India is also nearby and provides traditional dishes from across India in a space outfitted with British Colonial decor. Mon Ami Gabi is an adorable French restaurant with a lunch and dinner menu in a lively art deco-style setting.

Bethesda is a golfer’s paradise, with five country clubs in and around the Bethesda area. Burning Tree Club sits on the western end of the city and north of that is the Bethesda Country Club. Columbia Country Club and Chevy Chase Club border the city to the east while Kenwood Golf and Country Club sits just north of the Potomac.

South of Kenwood is Little Falls Stream Valley Park, a park shared with DC. This scenic, 160-acre woodland features a play area, picnic facilities and trails for hiking and biking. Glen Echo Park is another wonderful park that provides all types of events and classes like ballroom dancing, art, photography and more. Cabin John Regional Park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, tennis courts and an indoor ice rink. The Capital Crescent Trail is a great place for bikers, hikers and joggers, and it connects to Georgetown.

Transportation Around Bethesda

Metro’s Red line services three stations within Bethesda: Friendship Heights, Bethesda and the Medical Center station located by the Walter Reed Medical Center. All three stations travel along the eastern section of the neighborhood. The Montgomery County Ride On bus system also has several bus routes through Bethesda and a free loop bus, called the Bethesda Circulator, that operates throughout most of downtown. The Capital Beltway surrounds the northwestern section of the city and provides easy access to nearby locations. Other important routes around the city include Route 190, 191, 614, 355, and 187.
