Guide to Burtonsville, MD
Burtonsville is a census-designated place located in Montgomery County, Maryland. Known for its great location to the Patuxent River and the abundance of recreational opportunities it provides, this sought-after community also features plenty of diverse housing and it’s within close distance to Laurel and Columbia.
West of Laurel
Burtonsville is roughly situated by the Patuxent River to the north, Burtonsville Park to the west, Greencastle Road to the south, and Old Gunpowder Road to the east. West Laurel and then Laurel border the community to the east, Fairland is to the south, Cloverly to the west, and beyond the Patuxent River is Columbia to the north.
Named For Isaac Burton
The area of Burtonsville, originally called Burton’s, takes its name from Isaac Burton, who in 1825 bought out his sibling’s shares of his father’s land and thus becoming the major landowner of the area. The community slowly grew around the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and the road to Sandy Spring. Around the 1850’s, Isaac Burton became the first official postmaster of the newly established post office in the area, which also operated out of his store on the intersection. Today, the core of the community still centers on the intersection of Route 198 and Route 29.
Route 198 & Route 29
Route 198 is the areas main east-west route. If traveling west, the route disbands in Spencerville and soon becomes Norbeck Road. Traveling east on Route 198 will take you to downtown Laurel and into Maryland City. Route 29 is the only other major route in the area and is the community’s main north-south route. Traveling north for roughly 30 minutes and this route will take you to downtown Columbia and will eventually end in Ellicott City. If traveling south on Route 29, you can go as far Washington, D.C.
The majority of housing available in Burtonsville is limited to single-family detached homes, but townhomes and apartment buildings are also spattered around the area. Houses here vary in style, construction year, and in scenery. You can find anything from a 50-year old secluded bungalow in woodland area to large Colonial homes in tree-lined suburban streets. Other popular styles found here are ramblers, contemporaries, split-levels, and new traditional.
Town Centre at Laurel for Nightlife
Since Burtonsville is mostly a residential community, there are very little shopping and entertainment options within the area. The core of the community, located at the intersection of Route 29 and Route 198, supplies regular errand needs with establishments such as Giant and CVS. There are also quite a few restaurants located here such as Chapala. This vividly colored, family-owned Mexican restaurant offers Sunday brunch, a friendly atmosphere, and classic dishes like vegetable fajitas and shrimp bruchetta. This spot also provides magic shows and salsa lessons. Another great local eatery is down the street at Cuba de Ayer. This casual restaurant is also family-owned and offers home-style Cuban cuisine and an extensive drink list set to a lively salsa soundtrack. Other establishments in the area are Zen Asian Grille & Sushi, Kim’s Hunan, and Pepino’s Kitchen.
For more dining, entertainment, and shopping options, most residents like to travel to nearby Town Centre at Laurel. Located next to Laurel Centre Mall Shopping Center, this shopping mall has a Burlington Coat Factory, Sports Authority, Old Navy, Kay Jewelers, and Marshalls to name a few. For entertainment, check out the local Regal Cinema located on Baltimore Avenue and Chuck E. Cheese’s located just down the street. As far as restaurants, check out Nando’s Peri-Peri, BURGERFI, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse, Pollo Campero, and El Charro Restaurant.
Burtonsville Park is located on the western end of the community on Oursler Road. A 29-acre park, this park’s recreational opportunities include a playground, baseball field, soccer field, an urban and regional park, volleyball and handball courts, a recreation center, a football field, and a hockey field. There are also plenty of trails and streams within the park as well. Another terrific park in the community is Columbia Park, located on Old Columbia Pike. This 25-acre park’s recreational features include a playground, several ball fields, tennis courts, and a picnic area with an open shelter. Located next to Columbia Park is the Marilyn J. Praisner Community Recreation Center. This multi-purpose recreational facility provides a variety of activities and events for people of all ages. Some opportunities found here are not limited to classes and events on sports, fitness, dance, art, and music. Wedding receptions and private parties are also common here.
Some other green spaces in and around the community are the T. Howard Duckett Watershed, Union Cemetery of Montgomery, Fairland Recreational Park, and the Gunpowder Golf Course. Shared with nearby Laurel, this golf course was designed to follow the natural topography of the land in the Scottish tradition. Rolling hills, bordered by trees on every hole, provides a challenging course for golfers of all ages. Burtonsville also holds an annual “Burtonsville Day”, celebrating Isaac Burton’s existence. The event isn’t restricted to one specific area in the community, with activities such as petting zoos and various games known to be held annually.
Burtonsville is a small community comprised of many different recreational opportunities and wonderfully diverse housing options. Although there is very little entertainment options in the area, its location to downtown Laurel and Columbia allows plenty of nightlife while being within touching distance of home.
