When Montgomery County was created in 1776, its boundaries were defined as being near the beginning of the east side of the mouth of Rock Creek on the Potomac River, and running to the mouth of Monocacy. Near the cities of Bethesda and Silver Spring sits the district line of Washington, DC. The Potomac River—as well as the Virginia state line—flows towards the western end of the county, while Columbia is to the east, and Green Valley is to the north. Adjacent counties include Frederick, Fairfax, Loudoun and Carroll Counties.

Things to Do in Montgomery County
The majority of Montgomery County’s well-known restaurants, bars, music venues, and other entertainment establishments are primarily found in popular urban commercial centers like Bethesda, Silver Spring and Rockville. Bethesda Crab House is a no-frills crab house serving Maryland steamed crabs, crab cakes and more. La Panetteria is a trattoria serving hearty Italian cuisine in a space with stucco walls, framed classical art, and an atrium. A&J Restaurant in Rockville is a fantastic Chinese restaurant serving traditional dim sum and other Chinese dishes that are plated in a spare, simple setting.
Honey Pig Restaurant is a lively Korean BBQ joint in Germantown with industrial décor and diners grilling meats off tabletops. As far as entertainment options go, the Mansion at Strathmore is a beautiful art gallery and music establishment offering performing arts while hosting a diverse range of global musicians in a modern, glass-enhanced setting. Imagination Stage in Bethesda offers theater arts and education for children. For concerts, it’s hard to beat The Fillmore, a big-name, live music venue featuring national and international acts.
Enjoying the Great Outdoors in Montgomery County
Sligo Creek Golf Course is just up the street from Downtown Silver Spring and is one of many golf courses located within the county. Montgomery also boasts numerous neighborhood, local, and state parks all scattered throughout the area’s boundaries. Rock Creek Regional Park is a large parkland in Derwood and offers multiple hiking trails, lakeshore wildlife-watching, plus playgrounds and boat rentals. Also located at this park are Go Ape Zip Line and Treetop Adventures.
Water Park at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg features an outdoor swimming pool with deep lanes and shallow play areas and a 250-foot double waterslide. In Potomac, there is the Blockhouse Point Conservation Park, a 630-acre riverside park offering trails, wildlife-watching, native flora and Civil War ruins.
Traveling Around Montgomery County
I-495 and I-270 are the two main interstates in Montgomery County, with the latter approximately bisecting the county to the northwest and to the southeast. Other major routes are Route 27, 28, 97, 185, 190 and 355. WMATA’s Metrobus services the entire county while Amtrak stops can be found in Rockville. Both suburban arms of the Red line of the Washington Metro serve Montgomery County and commercial air service is provided at the nearby Reagan National Airport, Dulles and BWI.
